Selection of a good cutting board

Irrespective of the different types of knives being used in the kitchen, you are sure in need of a cutting board. Separate cutting boards are preferred by many cooks for cutting meat and vegetables. Nowadays you are available with different varieties of cutting boards. Do you know the fact that some kind of cutting boards will make the knife blend so soon than expected? So it is always necessary to choose the right cutting board in order to protect the knife with its sharpness for a longer period of time. Though the knife will become dull over a period of time by doing a lot of cutting it needs to be sharpened when necessary.

Normally the cutting boards are made of materials like wood, plastic or tempered glass. The cutting boards made of plastic are the most commonly used and are available in different colors to match your interior of the kitchen. They have a non porous surface which makes the washing of the juice that comes out of the meat and vegetables. Also these are least expensive. The plastic one has another benefit of being usable in the dish washer. But with a sharp knife they will get more cuts in them. The deeper the cut in the cutting board, the more the need to change it as the cuts might have bacteria in it.

Wooden boards are used previously like wooden chopping blocks or butcher block from many centuries before. These wooden boards will keep the sharpness of the knife for a longer time. Also the wooden chopping boards are available in different style like handcrafted ones. People with taste for handcrafts will love to have this in their collection than the plastic chopping board.

The main drawback with the wooden cutting board is being porous. This will allow the bacteria to soak in the cuts made by the knife in the meat. It will be dangerous then to cut raw meat in it. The problem can be solved almost by thorough cleaning of the board. Sometimes it won’t work with the dish washer and in that case washing them with hand will surely help getting rid of the germs. However washing with hand will take time for the board to dry as it is soaked in a lot of water.


In case of the tempered glass cutting boards, they can double as hot pad as they are so opposing to heat. The benefits are they can be used in a dish washer. Also the surface is so hard that it won’t make any cuts in the cutting board that makes place for the bacteria. These cutting boards are available in a lot of designs. The negative part is that it will make the knife dull a lot easier, and the noise that it will make while cutting with the knife, irritate a lot of chefs.
